An Introduction
Cultivating the corner lot is exactly what I'm doing on my city lot here in Norfolk. We are completely visible to our neighbors-so everyone nearby knows my chickens and generally what is growing in the gardens-if they ask because some of it isn't all that common around here. My chickens are licensed through the city and are completely legal-while it isn't the most fun thing in the world with paperwork and annual fees I am glad to live in a city that does have an option for legal chickens so we choose to support that endeavor. We have six hens they are Muffin, Juicy, Noodle, Dumpling, Kylo Hen, and Ms. Frizzle. The first four are laying and the last two just hatched out the first week of May, so won't be laying for a few more months. My gardens aren't huge plots but neither is my lot especially compared to our former home back in Indiana that sat on just under a half acre, but I do have one of the largest in our neighborhood, which is why we chose this particular house. I can be swimming in salty water with a quick five minute drive down the road to the Chesapeake Bay and a grocery store is walking distance so being in the city has its perks. We've considered moving back to more rural areas or closer to work-but so far have been attached to what we have already cultivated here-good friends, neighbors and a community. While I know that if we were to find someplace else to call home we'd have no problems finding those same things because you reap what you sow.
